Studio Log : Floral Sketchbook Studies

My garden is beginning to blossom, I’ve got a spot of tulips in full bloom, white and black mixed, a patch of anemones in red and white just beginning to open, and some stems of ranunculus blossoms following close behind.

I’m hoping to capture some of these blooms in a pattern or two this spring and summer. I’ve been exploring decorative arrangements, and small compositions while also experimenting with ink blocks and oil pastels.

Artist's sketchbook with roughly drawn decorative florals in pencil, sits on a work table.

I haven’t quite got the hang of the blocks yet, but I quite like their transparency and layering ability.

The curling leaves on the anemone are lovely, and I’ll want to explore their shapes more.

I also found some images of avalanch lilies, these aren’t from my yard, but their general posture makes me interested in drawing more.

They will surely find their way into a pattern soon.
